UNITARIAN CHURCH
Location: Dubuque, IA
Project Size: 6,500 SF
Sector: Historic Rehabilitation, Churches
Services Rendered: Project Manager, Construction Manager, Contractor
Constructed in 1885 as a German Methodist church, the building was purchased by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in 2003. Many decades and renovations ultimately hid the historic fabric of the building.
The church congregation kicked-off a restoration in 2021 through which Gronen served as project manager, construction manager, and contractor to rehabilitate the church. This included the fabrication and installation of a historically accurate belfry recreated from historic photos. Extensive work was performed on the foundation, structural components, and the team restored the original wood windows. The original cedar shake roof and siding, as well as the original moldings were replaced or refinished, restoring them to their 1885 original form. Original masonry chimneys, as well as the entire façade were also restored. An ADA lift was implemented along with a full kitchen in the lower level.
The adjoining rectory, known fondly as the Emerson House, was also a part of the rehabilitation work. The original wood molding façade and masonry façade were restored. The cedar shake roof was replaced, which included all copper flashings and details.
